Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) is the UK charity working to make it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle. This post sits in its Northern Ireland team, which runs the Active School Travel programme.

The Role

The Project Officer leads behaviour change and engagement work with selected schools across Belfast, Lisburn and Newtownards, helping more children and families choose active journeys to school. It's a part-time post at 17.5 hours a week, fixed-term until 31 August 2027, with a possible extension subject to funding.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver walking, wheeling and cycling activities for pupils, including cycle training, learn-to-cycle sessions, Dr Bike events, led walks and road safety education
  • Build relationships with school active travel champions, including principals, teachers and parents
  • Advise and support schools to embed active travel
  • Promote the health, wellbeing, safety and environmental benefits of active travel to school communities

What you'll need

  • Understanding of active travel and the barriers facing people who experience inequalities
  • Knowledge of behaviour change theories and tools, particularly for engaging school communities
  • Experience of youth work or school engagement
  • Experience leading group workshops and presenting to varied audiences
  • Ability to work in ways that promote the safety and wellbeing of children, young people and adults at risk
